Natural Resources Form 47 Pct of the 'GDP of the Poor' in India

Bangalore: India is pacing in the field of technology but still is a giant in agricultural sector. As per the UNEP report the ecosystem and the non marketed supplies account for 47 percent to 89 percent of the ‘GDP of the poor’ in India, which is remarkably high compared to the national GDP in Indonesia and Brazil, where the estimate is just 6 percent to 17 percent for agriculture, forestry and fisheries.

Agriculture, forestry and animal husbandry, are collectively called the ‘GDP of the poor’. It is from these sectors that the poor earn their living and find jobs in most of the developing countries.

After Prime Minister Manmohan Singh stressed on the importance of the ‘GDP of the poor’ the UN report stated that the 47 percent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in India is drawn from the natural resources of the impoverished rural Indian mass. As per the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) analysis 352 million poor Indians make the 47 percent by utilizing the natural resources such as forest product harvest, medicinal herbs collected from forests and fishing, as reported by Chetan Chauhan for Hindustan Times.
