New Delhi: The various Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) will have an external review every three years, it was decided Wednesday.

The decision on the review, which will be important for the IIMs moving towards more autonomy, was taken at a meeting of the IIM directors with Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal and his deputy, D. Purandeshwari.

"Every three years, there should be an external review of each IIM which could be discussed in the IIM Council," a ministry official said, giving details of the meeting.

One of the main issues on the agenda, greater autonomy to the IIMs, was also discussed at the meeting and the revised Memoranda of Association (MoAs) of Ahmedabad and Indore finalised. The process of revision of MoAs of Bangalore, Lucknow and Kozhikode is also under way.

All the IIMs have amended their MoAs that have been sent for approval to the ministry. The MoAs, providing for the rules and guidelines for IIMs, are being revised to make these institutions more independent.

The directors of Calcutta, Lucknow, and Kozhikode IIMs also said that teaching requirements along with faculty peer review is in place, while IIM-Bangalore said the process for devising a faculty review is on.

On establishing new IIMs, it was mentioned that land issues in respect of all new IIMs had been resolved. Directors of all new IIMs are also in place and the process for selection of a director for IIM-Kashipur is at an advanced stage.

"A standing committee had been constituted for co-coordinating matters between the new IIMs," the official said.

It was also decided that the IIMs will share admission information to make the process convenient for students, but the proposal for a common admission policy was rejected.

"On the issue of a common admission policy, it was felt that the admission policy of each IIM was sacrosanct," the official said.
