How to Crack a Group Discussion

Bangalore: Students consider Group discussion to be a dreadful task and find it hard to sail through it. A group discussion helps to identify how skilled the candidate is in communicating his ideas within a large group. The behaviour of the person, his IQ level, his personality and his participation, everything is given due care. Once you prepare properly for group discussions, it won’t be a tough task for you to outshine others. Here are few suggestions that will help you to crack the GD easily-

Prepare well before the discussion:
Make appropriate use of the time given for preparing on a specific topic. First listen to the topic carefully and try to understand its theme. After that you can make a note of your points in a sheet of paper.

Take initiative:

You can begin the discussion by explaining the topic and its prominence. But take initiative, only if you have understood the topic clearly. Otherwise it can create a bad impression, instead of getting you plus points.

Don't divert from the topic:

Try to keep the discussion on track and don’t come up with irrelevant points. If the discussion deviates from the original track, bring it back to the subject. This can make you easily get noticed among other candidates and indicates your leading power.

Don't go for arguments:

Don't argue with other people over certain points, as it can create a negative image. Remember that it's a discussion, not debate. Allow other people to speak and don't interrupt them while they are talking. Instead listen carefully and if necessary take notes.

Be sensible:

Speak in a simple, sensible tone. It is not the amount of time you talk which matters, but what really counts is what you speak. Control your emotions while speaking and be polite. Even if you disagree with other’s points, don’t express your anger and disappointment.

Maintain Eye contact:

Maintaining eye contact shows how confident you are. Don’t fix your eyes on the table or a faraway tree, which indicates nervousness and tension. Also, make sure that you give equal attention to everyone.

Dress Formally:

Use formal outfits while attending a group discussion. Casual dressing can create an impression that you haven’t taken the discussion seriously.
