Government to provide writer for visually impaired MBA student

Mumbai: All visually challenged students would be provided with writers during examinations from this academic year. Maharashtra government today informed the Bombay High Court.A division bench of Chief Justice Mohit Shah and Justice G S Godbole was hearing a petition filed by visually impaired student Kanchan Pamnani, also a lawyer, who had sought admission to MBA course in Jamnalal Bajaj institute.
Additional government pleader G W Mattos today submitted an affidavit filed by the Deputy Director of Technical Education which stated that the government on May 23 directed all the universities in Maharashtra to comply with a circular dated December 20, 2006 issued by the Commissioner for the Disabled.
The circular permitted a disabled student to avail the services of a writer ought to be one grade junior in academic qualification than the candidate if from the same stream. Mattos told the court that from next year appropriate directions would be incorporated in the brochure for different courses.The court has however struck down one condition imposed by the state government that the writer should have lesser marks than the candidate in his exams.
