Chennai: The global economic downturn three years ago has resulted in a dip in the number of Management education aspirants, a top official of Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta (IIM-C) says.

"Management education is attracting lesser number of students and many institutes have been facing problem due to dwindling number (of aspirants)," IIM-C Director Shekher Chaudhury said.

However, the prestigious IIM-C was not facing any problems "since it is a well-established one," he told PTI on the sidelines of the IIM-C Golden Jubilee celebrations here on behalf of the institute's Chennai alumni chapter. Even applications for his institution had come down from around 2.6 lakh to 2.10 lakh. But that was not significant since only 460 students are admitted.
He replied in the affirmative when asked if this was the situation since 2008-09. On IIM-C, he said both the student intake and faculty strength had been increased in the past few years and said "the future looked bright," for the institution.

He lauded the Chennai chapter for giving back to the students by sharing expertise. In the form of a workshop where real-time issues are discussed with students in what is an annual affair.
Ravi Santhanam, president, IIM-C alumni Chennai chapter said that requests were also being received from other B-Schools to conduct similar workshop. PTI
