B schools classification in India

There are about 6000 B-schools in India. It is a tough task to decide which B-school to go to given this wide range of B-schools, more tougher is classifying Schools that offer management education.

In a report submitted to the Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh by the Working Group of the Knowledge Commission, it stressed about many points, here are some of the important ones:
• AICTE is not very well-equipped to handle management education system, given its competence in Engineering education. Hence regulation, at best, is ineffective and at worst can lead to disastrous consequences.
• Dearth of quality faculty to deliver quality management education, on account of both quality (inefficient teachers) and quantity (insufficient number of faculty to run a program)
• The wrong notion of “education being an act of charity and social work” (it recommended that private participation be allowed with a cap on profits being repatriated, so that quality can be brought into the academic system).
From the given points given above, it can be concluded that a larger number of institutions are incapable of offering quality education and out there to loot the students.

Since the MBA aspirant is going to spend a huge amount of money and more importantly his/her precious two-year’s time, he/she needs to understand what type of B-school he/she should join. This assessment is based on the general features and the characteristics of the B-schools in India. This a pointer for all students seeking management education to make a good and well-informed choice based on the parameters given below:
Value adding parameter: This can be divided in two types, namely content-based value addition and process-based value addition.

Content based value addition – It is an in-depth course content which is relevant to industry, contemporary and that meets corporate requirements. This will add value to the future managers by being on top of the chosen area of specialization.

Process based value addition – These are the activities that are driven by deadlines, constraints of multiple team memberships and learning not only “what to do” but also “how to do”.

Based on the parameters given above, various B-schools can be categorized, with each of them taking three values of high, medium and low. Only B-schools like the IIIMs can achieve the combination of high process and high content value addition. This needs a lot of slack, academic expertise and it must be based on the principle of effectiveness, rather than that of efficiency. If an institute has to become effective like the IIMs, cost cutting and profit making must not kept in priority.

In order to compensate for the lack of any actual value addition through process or content, high marketing campaign should be kept in place. The MBA aspirant should know that the institute needs to have capability and the willingness to deliver quality management education. Making the right choice in choosing the right B-school will probably help you in becoming successful in the managerial world. So, keep your best forward and make the right choice.
