input buffer

Hi..I'm currently on the second chapter. How is the space allocated in the input buffer? In the examples provided, there doesn't seem to be a set number of spaces provided for each string or a set number of spaces left after each string. Is there a pattern?

As far as I know if we are using SAS under mainframe environment which I do currently in my job work. we usually specify the exact location of each variable start position that is applicable for every observation.
and if I can think about how it gets implemented in SAS tool environment would be default space value just to identify starting of new variable in each observation. someone please correct if I am wrong for implementation in SAS tool environment.
