Vivek Agnihotri Criticizes Donald Trump's 100% Movie Tariff, Calls It a Threat to Indian Cinema

Indian director Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri has strongly condemned the newly introduced 100% movie import tariff by American President Donald J. Trump as a "disastrous move" that will adversely affect India's already reeling film industry.

In a tweet, Agnihotri said: "ALERT: Trump's 100% Movie Tariff Threatens Indian Cinema: Trump's 100% movie tariff is a catastrophic decision. If this stupidity persists, India's ailing film industry will be in ruins, and nobody will be there to rescue it. Indian film leaders need to wake up, come together, and fight this menace rather than going for paparazzi and self-adulation."

His comments follow Trump's announcement, in which he described the new tariff as a national security tariff to resuscitate the American film industry, which he asserts is being threatened by foreign incentives and propaganda.

Trump said: "The Hollywood Industry in America is DYING a very quick death. Thus, I am directing the Department of Commerce and the United States Trade Representative to immediately start the process of implementing a 100% Tariff on any and all Movies entering our Country produced in Foreign Countries. WE WANT MOVIES MADE IN AMERICA, AGAIN!"

The suggested policy may have significant consequences for the international film industry, especially for nations such as India that consistently send out films and entertainment content to America. Indian films, in particular Bollywood and regional cinema, have a well-established fan base in the U.S., and such a tariff may critically limit that access.

Agnihotri’s call for unity within the Indian film community highlights growing concerns that global protectionist policies could lead to significant economic and cultural setbacks for non-Western cinema industries. As the situation develops, industry stakeholders and trade officials are likely to seek dialogue and diplomatic solutions to prevent a full-scale disruption in cross-border entertainment exchanges.
