SS Rajamouli Opens India's First Dolby-Certified Postproduction Facility
In a landmark moment for Indian cinema, Annapurna Studios launched the country's first Dolby-certified postproduction facility for cinema and home entertainment on January 10, 2025. The facility was inaugurated by celebrated filmmaker SS Rajamouli and veteran actor Nagarjuna Akkineni, vice chairman of Annapurna Studios.
The event marked a significant milestone in Indian filmmaking technology. SS Rajamouli, whose Academy Award-winning film RRR was the first Indian movie released in Dolby Cinema, showcased exclusive footage from the film to demonstrate the potential of Dolby Vision technology. Sharing his excitement, Rajamouli recalled the challenges of traveling to Germany for Dolby Vision grading during RRR's production.
"During RRR, I had to go all the way to Germany to grade the film in Dolby Vision. It was disheartening not to have such facilities in India. Today, seeing this state-of-the-art facility at Annapurna Studios is a dream come true. By the time my next film releases, India will have multiple Dolby Cinemas, offering audiences an unparalleled cinematic experience," Rajamouli said. He highlighted the transformative impact of Dolby Vision, praising its crystal-clear clarity and storytelling enhancements.
Nagarjuna Akkineni emphasized Annapurna Studios' commitment to innovation, noting that the launch coincides with the studio's 50th anniversary. He reflected on the studio's legacy of adopting cutting-edge technology, from pioneering virtual production to now housing India’s first Dolby-certified facility.
"Annapurna Studios has always strived to push Indian films to global standards. Our collaboration with Dolby reinforces this commitment. As we celebrate our 50th year, this facility is a testament to our vision of embracing change and innovation in filmmaking," Nagarjuna said.
The Dolby-certified facility is poised to elevate the audio-visual standards of Indian cinema, providing filmmakers with advanced tools to create globally competitive content. This collaboration with Dolby marks a significant step in enhancing the cinematic experience for Indian audiences.
As Indian filmmakers increasingly embrace global benchmarks, this development is expected to encourage more productions to utilize high-end postproduction capabilities, ensuring immersive storytelling and exceptional viewer experiences.
