Should Entrepreneurship be taught at B-schools?

Bangalore:A recent study conducted by professors from Babson College revealed that entrepreneurship should be taught to every business student.

The research was done in order to figure out if teaching entrepreneurship was beneficial for the students. The survey was conducted on 3,755 Babson College alumni who have graduated between 1985 and 2009. The professors after analyzing the career paths of the alumni came to the conclusion that, “It is the very origin of all businesses -- after all, there would be no business schools if there had never been any entrepreneurs!"

According to the study, doing only one course in entrepreneurship did not have a strong influence on the students, the reason maybe that after the completion of the course, they must have realized that they don’t want to be entrepreneurs. Infact that students taking two or more entrepreneurship courses were later on more likely to launch their own businesses.

The study also covered the fact that students with entrepreneurial parents had more or less no effect on the students’ decision when they are taking up a course on entrepreneurship. Moreover, no difference could be found between an undergrad and an MBA student when it comes to becoming an entrepreneur. Students with full-time courses plan on becoming entrepreneurs but those students with part-time courses were more likely to start a business for real.

The alumni in the survey reported that although they have planned on becoming entrepreneurs, they had to give it up due to various reasons like family commitments, increase in their salaries, fear of losing a salaried job and risking their family’s financial security etc. However, at the same time the study also found that if they were not satisfied with their jobs, they were more likely to become entrepreneurs.

The researchers wrote, "We think that entrepreneurship should be taught not only for the production and training of entrepreneurs but also to help students decide if they have the right stuff to be entrepreneurs before they embark on careers for which they may be ill-suited.” Adding that, "At a more abstract level, we believe that entrepreneurship should be taught to every business student because it is the very origin of all businesses."
