IIM Calcutta will be conducting the CAT Entrance Exam for the year 2011. Marketing Professor at IIM Calcutta, Prof. Janakiraman Moorthy who has been appointed as CAT 2011 Convener has confirmed the information. The agency, Pro-metric which has been conducting CAT for the last two years will continue to conduct the CAT entrance exam this year too. Pro-metric and IIM Calcutta will make the official announcement later.

In 2010, the CAT entrance exam was held in a 20 day test window between 27th October, 2010 and 24th November, 2010. The official announcement was made on Sunday, 22nd August, 2010. The Application process started from 30th August, 2010 till 4th October, 2010. Last date for the online registration process was on 7th October, 2010. In 2010, about 2.06 lakh candidates registered for the CAT entrance exam which is lower compared to CAT 2009, as about 2.42 lakh registered for it. CAT 2010 was conducted by IIM Lucknow and IIM Calcutta, and Prof. Himanshu Rai, Admission Chairperson of IIM Lucknow was made the Convener for CAT 2011.

CAT 2009 and CAT 2010 had some huge variations. CAT 2009 was the first year of the computer based test but it didn’t turn out the way as was expected and it was a major disaster. Since it was the first year of the computer based test, the CAT 2009 exam went through several kinds of technical problems like server crash, computer screen getting blank etc. in different test centers all across India. For all those candidates who faced these problems, a retest was scheduled for them by the IIMs and Pro-metric. But then, many candidates claimed that they were not allowed to take a retest, or even worse, they did not receive any response from Pro-metric and IIM.

CAT 2009 was originally scheduled for 10 days, starting from 28th November 2010 to 7th December 2010 and was further extended for a day on 8th December, 2010. And the retests were scheduled on 30th and 31st January, 2011. To avoid the technical malfunctions, Prof. Himanshu Rai decided to make the duration of the CAT exam to be held for 20 days instead of 10 consecutive days.
