Change in CAT 2011 question pattern

Bangalore: The IIMs are changing the CAT questions pattern in order to achieve its goal of having a mix of students from all streams of education. The IIMs are planning to lure students from all backgrounds for its two-year post graduate management diploma programme in order to produce managers who would not only understand mathematical data but also have knowledge about other subjects too.

The exam, which had three sections- quantitative ability, verbal ability and data interpretation & logical reasoning, will now have two. Quantitative ability and Data Interpretation will be one section and Logical reasoning and verbal ability constitutes the second section. Overall score was considered earlier to get through, but they will have to score equally well in both sections to make it to the merit list.

90 percent of the students who crack CAT are usually engineers doing well in quantitative ability and data interpretation. The stress on verbal ability-grammar and comprehension- is anticipated to bring in students from other educational streams.

It is also the first time that students will be given restricted time to answer both the sections. Candidates will be given 140 minutes-70 minutes to answer 30 questions in each section. The computerized test which began two years ago by Prometric, introduces an on screen countdown timer. Once time ends for the first section, the second section opens and there will be no going back.
