Could you tell us briefly about your family background?
I come from a Defence family background. My father retired as a Colonel from the Indian Army. Mother is a home-maker.My elder brother runs his business. Younger brother is a hospitality professional, currently overseas. Last but not the least , my younger sister, who is a lecturer.
Job Profile:
I run a Hotel Management Institute and look after all its day-to-day activities, like marketing, admissions, student welfare and administration. My centre is the nodal centre with 4 sub-centres under my supervision. It is a challenging and often thankless job, but satisfying at the end of the day.
Role Model:
My Dad and Mom are my role models. They came from a humble background but made sure that all of us got the best there was. They instilled the right values in us and we are what we are today because of the correct grounding that we got. And the values were set as an example, not taught like ABC.
Prized Accomplishment(s):
The fact that I have trained scores of students in the last 12 odd years and it is satisfying when they turn up several years later acknowledging the efforts put years ago.
Required Reading:
Reading has been the daily dose on which I survive.
Newspapers are a must daily and so are some periodicals like Outlook, HBR,Time etc.Huffington Post is a good publication and their blogs are also excellent.I also recommend some good fiction writers like Robin Cook, Jeffry Archer, Paulo Coehlo..
Changes In The Professional Environment:
Technology has been a catalyst for change. Work is conducted much faster and more accurately. Remote support cuts back costs and is efficiently effective. New blood joining is very talented and knows what they have to do. Training now is more of polishing the skills rather than imparting.
Growth Strategy:
I try and learn something new every year, be it a new language or a new strategy to manage or even something in computers. I never lose touch of the ground level employees to get a fair idea of what is lacking and what can be improved. And most of all I listen.
Working Life Management:
I have very supportive parents and a great organisation. And since I am still single, it is not much of a hassle, as yet...
Plans For The Future:
Possibly reaching out to more and more students and a platform which will allow me to do that.
Done Differently:
I would become serious about my career earlier than frittering away precious time deciding what to do. I would also take the advice of a good career counsellor.
