The badminton player from Hyderabad and student of former Indian badminton player Pullela Gopichand made India proud by winning a silver medal at the Rio Olympics. She became an only Indian women athlete to win a silver medal in Olympics surpassing Saina Nehwal, who won bronze medal in the 2012 London Olympics. She was ranked ninth at the start of the event and defeated many high-ranked player to reach the finals. Spanish player Carolina Marin defeated her in final, but that journey alone was capable of creating sensation for badminton among Indian public.
