India created history by winning its first-ever Women’s World Cup title, defeating South Africa by 52 runs in a thrilling final at DY Patil Stadium on Sunday. The victory ended years of heartbreak and marked a new era for Indian women’s cricket.

India’s win was built on a stunning display from Shafali Verma, who smashed a fiery 87 runs to help her team post 298/7. She later picked up two crucial wickets, turning the match in India’s favour after South Africa captain Laura Wolvaardt (101) threatened to take the game away with her second consecutive century.

All-rounder Deepti Sharma added depth to India’s innings with a quickfire 58 off 58 balls and then dominated with the ball, taking 5 for 39. Her consistent performance throughout the tournament, 22 wickets and 215 runs, earned her the Player of the Tournament award, while Verma was named Player of the Match.

South Africa, chasing 299, fought hard but were bowled out for 246 in 46 overs. Once Wolvaardt was dismissed, India took full control of the contest.

India’s top batter Smriti Mandhana, overcome with emotion, said, “It’s unreal. Every World Cup brought heartbreaks, but this time, our belief and support carried us through”.

Captain Harmanpreet Kaur hailed her team’s resilience, calling the triumph a reward for 'years of dedication and belief'.
