Samrat Rana, a 20-year-old shooter from Karnal, created history by becoming India’s first world champion in the men’s 10m air pistol event at the ISSF World Championships in Cairo. Rana delivered a sensational performance, shooting 243.7 in the final to edge past China’s Hu Kai (243.3) and secure a landmark gold for India.

The young shooter also helped India win the team gold alongside Varun Tomar and Shravan Kumar, marking a dominant show in the pistol category. The trio’s combined score of 1754 points placed India ahead of Italy and Germany.

Rana’s calm composure proved decisive in a tightly contested final, where the lead frequently shifted between him, Hu Kai, and Varun Tomar. Tomar added to India’s glory by clinching the bronze medal with 221.7 points, making it the first time two Indians shared the podium in the same event at the World Championships.

“This feels unreal. Cairo has always been lucky for me, I won two medals here in 2022,” Rana said after his victory. Guided by his father since 2018, Rana has steadily risen through the ranks, winning the World University gold last year. His latest triumph cements his status as one of India’s brightest Olympic prospects.

In the women’s 10m air pistol, Manu Bhaker and Esha Singh narrowly missed podium finishes, though India bagged team silver in the event. Rana’s gold lifted India to third place in the overall medal tally, behind only China.
