Could you tell us briefly about your family background?
I belong to humble background where both my parents are teachers. Our ancestoes were poor farmers of a small village in Ballia,Uttar Pradesh. An unfortante flood ravaged all what we had some decades ago and forced us to move to Kolkata. Putting behind that we all worked hard for a good life we have
Areas for the Future
Data testing is going to be very critical in future. Businesses are evolving and are looking towards smarter and cheaper methods. The only way to keep doing so is to understand and slice and dice data. QA would be critical to certify weather new proposals are actual or just too ambitious.
Plans for the Future
I'm someone who want to be in between the thick of things. Despite of being a lead few years down the lane I see myself having better testing strategies and smarter ideas for assuring that testing is comprehensive. I would like to retain my core domain & tech skills with new management concepts
A Fine Balance:
By clearly exposing the humane effects of an IT personell. When personal life demands attention sometimes we need to stretch a bit. Cover up for lost time and effort on days which are normal. It's all about prioritizing and make sure nothing goes out of hands
Most Important Lessons
1-There are No shortcuts. Hardwork will always pay. Smart work will take you further.
2-Technical knowledge will always be in demand
3-Good relations will always make sure things are smooth for you and your work. But do not get personal and never give a chance to anyone to raise a finger on you
Degrees that Matter
ISTQB certification is a must it helped me as well
Get a certification in the technology you work for. Teradata certifications helped me immensely in a project where the database and ETL tool was Teradata.
The Journey So Far
I have seen highs as well as lows in my career. I was stuck in a stagnation of bench resources at the very start of my career. Seeing an opportunity in testing despite of a Devlopment background helped and saw me go ahead. Some stubbornness resulted in missing chances but learnt to be flexible
Current and Previous Responsibilities
Currently I have moved on teat Lead role. I do Testing as well as leading a team and interact with the client team. My previous role was just an associate role of testing. I'm now an active member of management besides being a mentor and guide to the team members with my experience
Most Important Decisions
1. When projects were not there I switched to QA roles from Development profile
2. Was flexible in changing my locations as per the project availability
3. Stuck to ETL/DW Testing keeping my technical edge
4. Taking up lead roles readily and work from the front
Currently working at
1. Test Planning and Test Strategy
2. Test Design and Execution
3. Manage a team of 3 resources
4. Interact with the client team and send status reports
5. Actively participate in management meetings and decisions
Essential Advice
1. Be flexible.
2. Never underestimate testing there are truckloads of opportunites in QA
3. Learn new types of testing. Explore the possibilities of working on new types of testing.
4. Have a mindset of a layman while testing it will help you get more defects.
5. Understand the Business
Tech trends to watch out for
There are increasing trends of specialized testing. Niche skills are emerging which NIIT's & Aptechs cant teach.
From my career perspective I have a hold on DB/DW/ETL concepts so I look to tap new skills based on them and enrich my profile
Role Model
My role model has to be Ralph Kimball. Being someone from a Non-IT background he re-wrote the laws of data storage and deviced the hottest skills of modern world. Someday I would love to be remembered as someone who was pathbreaking
Changes in the industry
Definitely. When we started 5 years new techonlogies were emerging and those technologies were not tough outside the organizations. New tools have emerged for testing. testing was considered downtrodden but not anymore. Everyone emphasizes equally on QA and new avenues have come up
Points of inflection
1. Changing my techology from Development to testing has been the biggest positive curve for me.
2. Enetering into retail industry was another positive curve which helped me grasp the Business concepts much easily and better than any other domain.
