Could you tell us briefly about your family background?
I have been raised in a middle class family in industrial city of Jamshedpur. My parents both of them are migrants having come to India from East Pakistan after the Partition. My father was an Electrical Engineer from Jadavpur, from which I also graduated later on.My mother was my closest friend.
Degrees that Matter
My bachelors degree in Computer Science help me in my entire career of 27 years. I may have played some on in QA/Testing assignments, where more than anything else the basic concepts stood like golden rules.
Areas for the Future
I guess automated testing suites and human factor shall significantly impact the testing domain. Ubiquitous computing brings a lot of various platforms. Artifical Intelligence can also take away a lot of routine and repetitative tasks. Analytics on test outcomes can be useful capability as well.
Essential Advice
Testing is the best place to start if someone intends to understand the intricacies of any application. With the advancement in tools and technology testing may no longer be mundane and boring. The other aspect of quality assurance is it importance in crtical applications.
Most Important Lessons
It is difficult to summarise but surely stressing on core technical fundamentals , collaborative approach and hunger to learn new things. In our fast changing world, obsolesence is always a threat and the way to counter is to have an open mind and eagerness to embrace new concepts.
Most Important Decisions
To shift from application development to system administration,from mainframe to open systems, from custom to packaged applications,from delivery to capability developments and even for a couple of years from IT to HR. It has been a wonderful and satisfying journey of learning and experimentation.
Plans for the Future
Probably indulging in innovation and exploring a different world. Who knows so long as there inquisitiveness in my mind and a zeal to learn new things from the younger minds. Also need to complete some unfulfilled dreams on the artistic front maybe doning some serious writing.
Role Model
One role model that inspires me was one of my early managers at Tata Motors, Mr. Ramesh. He was a great task master , great teacher and he taught me process orientation. There were others like Mr Somiyiaji of Oracle, who taught me technical thinking and humility in interaction.There are more names..
Current and Previous Responsibilities
My current role is more technology incubation and my area of expertise in business intelligence. It is different from my earlier role as it was more delivery focused. Now I am able to spend time to learn new things such as Big Data, Hadoop.I delivering lectures to university students and faculty too
The Journey So Far
Career has been eventful and adventurous, and at the same time very humbling. Met wonderful and talented people, inspiring leaders and above all interesting organizations. In my opinion, the first phase was more on learning, the second on exposure and consolidation and finally giving and sharing
Currently working at
I am more of a senior technical mentor aligned to "Architecture CoE" with expertise in Databases and Business Intelligence. I guide proof of concepts, drive innovation, technology discussions and architectural choices. It is more technology incubation and seed planting on core and emerging areas.
Points of inflection
When I moved out of mainframe /COBOL world to Unix / Oracle world. In more consulting phase in Australia,India and US got a wonderful exposure of different IT orgnaizations, businesses and technology. In my interactions with universities , my aim has been to fire the minds on young people with ideas
