8 Astonishing Big Data Deployments

6. National Archive and Records Administration Electronic Records Archive

NARA is the official record keeper for the U.S. and manages more than 142 terabytes of data. The data includes more than 7 billion projects and stores data coming from agencies such as federal ecosystem, Congress and several other presidential libraries. These records are stored in 4,800 different digitized formats. To perform the different archive functions, NARA has developed the Electronic Records Archive (ERA) that also assists with record management.

5. Vestas Wind Energy Turbine Placement and Maintenance

The Danish firm Vestas, in order to maximize power generation and reduce generation costs uses supercomputers and big data to figure out the optimal location for its wind turbines. To do this, it collects data from various weather systems spanned across the globe and its own wind library. The data that Vestas currently stores is temperature, barometric pressure, humidity, precipitation, wind velocity and the direction in addition to its own recorded historical data. The total data sums up to 2.8 Petabytes and is expected to grow more as it plans on adding metrics covering deforestation, historical, geospatial etc.
