4 Indian Cities Highly Susceptible to Disasters

2. Kolkata:

Kolkata, one of the most populated cities, is situated on the banks of Hooghly River near Sunderbans, the world's largest delta. This West Bengal capital city is one of the world’s most flood-prone coastalareas. Every year, this city is susceptible to flooding, especially during the rainy season, June-September. The flooding is mainly attributed to their 140-year-old drainage systems which cover less than 50 percent of the total city’s drainage and it is also one of the oldest drainage systems in the country. According to a study by researchers from the Netherlands and the UK, the growing population and the exposure to storms make it an easy target for natural calamities to hit this city.
Kolkata, though it has the third-biggest gross domestic product in the country, the study published in Nature Climate Change estimates that this city would lose $3.4 billion annually, mainly because of natural disasters.
