4 Indian Cities Highly Susceptible to Disasters
3. Chennai:
Chennai, a city of more than four million people is located on a flat plain with a low slope beach, in the southeast corner of India. The terrain of the city is flat with the average land height of 2.5 m above sea level and as such, it requires an extensive storm water drain system to prevent flooding and water stagnation across the city especially during monsoons. Because of its geographical location, this Indian city is prone to cyclones, floods, tsunamis, and natural disasters that bring epidemics, to add to the woes and destruction of the human being. Since some parts of the city are under sea level and this only adds to the city’s vulnerability when any forms of natural disasters strike. The most hazardous natural disaster to ever hit Chennai was the Tsunami of 2004 which killed over 10,000, people and destroyed more than 125,000 homes and hundreds of fishing boats as well as port and rail facilities.
