Current Trends
There is an explosion of data in every company nowadays. The companies which can really understand their customers behavior from their specific data can win in the long run by taking actions as per the insights. Data warehousing now happens in hadoop hdfs (open source), people want to run queries on them , capture hidden patterns and act on them as fast as possible. There is a lot of work in hortonworks, cloudera to make hive faster for the same purpose. New frameworks like impala, shark etc try to achieve these and people are adopting them. There are then the real time frameworks data analysis like storm, fluid and others which try to aggregate results in realtime for BI purposes. Lots of fast development happening in next gen hadoop ecosystem like YARN. In the coming years , with more explosion of mobile data and also web, companies will need more machines for storage, data recovery mechanisms, consistency and others. Optimization and easily managable big data systems will win.
Managing professional as well as personal life
Meet friends from college, go to meetup events, talk with new people, go to movies with newly made or already existing friends, meet entrepreneurs form the bay area, listen to video talks and try to learn as much as possible from founders/open source contributors/managers/ team mates. Sometime goes for a long walk around the Ocean beach.
My achievement
I have not achieved much in life yet. While I am still struggling to strike the right chord, one of the moments I feel proud was to start the flood relief program in NIT Silchar in 2008 when their was a huge flood and me along with my three other friends incarnated the program to help the adversely affected people living in the college neighborhood. We made an impact by providing them with free food and other needful stuffs. I really felt happy when people applauded us for our effort , it seemed like happiness was spreading around even in worse conditions.
Books recommended
internet is a huge book in itself. It depends on what they are interested in. I would say talk to people, check in quora blah blah. If you find something interesting talk it on with people nearby, find someone with similar interests, There are blogs on every special topic , connect with legit people on internet working on topics of your interest. Of course books are there but books are not the only way these days top open up your mind.Start the Talk of your interest, if you have start somewhere. Discussions opens up new ideas which may not be found on books.
Making job easier
health, good and smart colleagues, eager and on the feet always to learn and explore new areas and stacks.
My advice
todo:
1. never thing everything is perfect, there is lot of crap software code written and running. So never take anything for granted. There might be bugs even in the enterprise products like DATABASE itself: for ex: mysql.
2. Always try to be humble and talk with respect to your colleagues(junior or senior)
3. Go for excellence and strive for the extra mile, others will simply follow.
4. Be open and speak up your mind when you see something not going right. Talk to people , managers, good people are always around.
5. Trying to serve the human civilization should be the ultimate aim whether through a normal job or create your own starup and take humanity to next level.
6. Help people in need.
7. Keep the ethics right

Not Todo's
1. Never cheat.
2. Never be silent, be proactive and talk with people around the office, gain knowledge of what they do and how they do it.
My strongest Skill
1. anxiousness to know hidden things better, so many things in software stack , so many languages, its hard sometimes to catch up everything easily, but I try my best.
2. energy to explore even when some of the roads are blocked.
3. drive to go the extra mile on tasks at hand.
4. Respect for people around me.
5. Clear and concise communication of issues and deliverables with colleagues
Being different
Engineers are a critical part of what we have around the world today. They make things easier for people to have a pleasant and happy life form computers to all kinds of instruments used by various professionals around the globe. Engineering requires analytical mind and I believe every individual has an engineer within him/her unless they are kind of mental :) #justkidding
Goals and Ambitions
I want to contribute to the open source Big Data community.
Come up with my own startUp within 5 years and create something useful which would save people's time and not waste it.
Learn and explore more with machine learning, NLP , information retrieval and other geeky stuffs.
My role model
Jack Dorsey is my ideal. He is a fighting spirit, successful entrepreneur with two big company's twitter and square. He also does contribute to charity in Africa helping them get clean water. I like him most because he is always willing to take risk and do something exciting rather then settling down with whatever is existing., a fighting spirit , more information can be found here : https://sites.google.com/site/mollysdigitalhistory/jack-dorsey
My important career decision
1. Interning in a small NYC start up called Sonar.me: Here I got exposure to all the big adat frameworks and the privilege to work with the CTO of the company directly. This experience confirmed my belief that the work culture in a startup is much more fun and happening then the big orgs with freedom to design and deploy thing fast
2. Coming for Masters CS in USA : The education in US, gave me an exposure to what hot technologies and things people are working on in the industry like ML,NLP.IR etc. it helped me to build the basics from which I am truly benefiting now.
Company and job profile
I am Jyotirmoy Sundi, working in a gaming company (ngmoco, Dena) in San Francisco, USA. I work in analyzing, handling and finding insights out of the billions of gaming events per day. My work is related to hadoop, nosql and other open source technologies like cascading, storm, oozie, vizualization frameworks, machine learning stuffs and few others revolving around big data and insights
Views about 'Tech product Introduction is weak among Indians'
There is a famous post on quora for this http://www.quora.com/Startups-in-India/Why-has-India-failed-to-produce-tech-giants-like-Apple-Google-Facebook-Twitter-etc
To put it briefly :
1. Funding : Lack for proper funding to build a technology stack. break even needs some time , so people have to be patient
2. Encouragement from parents/relatives : People/Students should be allowed to taks risks at teens with a plan B if they fail. If they always play safe, then big dreams cannot be achieved. There should be govt agency to fund ideas for these group of people. Competitions/hackathons on entrepreneurship or software industry should be held more often with appropriate rewards to encourage people.
3. People should be more open minded and open to new ideas, although it would take time, I believe it would happen within next 1 or 2 generation with the advent of internet access to all nook and corners of the country.
Challenges faced in job
There are so many things,
1. Optimize existing systems to make it work faster with less exposure to bugs in production.
2. Make data insights realtime and consistent with enormous size of incoming gaming events.
3. Sharing of knowledge and going to relevant big data meetups with colleagues
4. Talking about startups, business cases , how gaming industry works.
Understanding all of above gives an idea of how a company is run on a daily basis from software stack to management to money in bank which would help me in future in higher positions or during my own startup thingy.
