9 Tech CEOs Who Were Jailed


Bangalore: It requires a lot of talent to reach the top position of a company, especially in ever-changing technology field- A super fine brain which always thinks out of the box, hard work, daring, commitment, pride and a lot more. But there are some execs who used these talent to engage in some extra-legal activities and unfortunately, get caught on the run.

For some of these execs who turned out to be guilty, it cost a lot from high profile trials and huge fines to long time imprisonments, while for others, it cost their company as a whole. Here is a list of such incidents compiled by InfoWorld, where the tech CEOs got caught and lost a fortune for indulging in cases ranging from fraud and conspiracies to shooting buffalos.

Bernie Ebbers, WorldCom

Ebbers, popularly known as the Telecom Cowboy, for his selection of jeans and cowboy boots to work was the co-founder and former CEO of Telecommunications Company, WorldCom. In 2005, he was found guilty of company’s false financial reporting. He had over-estimated the revenues by $5 billion over seven quarters and thereby caused a loss of $100 billion to the investors. The WorldCom scandal was the largest accounting scandal in U.S. history till 2008. The cowboy who drove himself to prison in his Mercedes is currently serving 25 years in federal prison in Louisiana.
