India-US Forge 'MEGA' Partnership for Prosperity: PM Modi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi coined India-US as a 'MEGA partnership for prosperity' when he shared this with former US President Donald Trump at a joint press conference held at the White House. Noting their like-minded vision, Modi pointed out that while Trump was working for MAGA Make America Great Again India was working on MIGA Make India Great Again.
Sharing on X, Modi stated, "President Trump frequently discusses MAGA. In India, we are striving for a Viksit Bharat, which in the American sense means MIGA. And together, the India-USA have a MEGA partnership for prosperity".
Trump greeted Modi warmly during their Oval Office meeting on Thursday (Friday IST) with a bear hug and a handshake, describing him as a 'terrific man' and a 'great friend'. The two leaders touched upon issues of trade, defense, and energy cooperation.
Trump declared that India will boost its buys of US oil, gas, and weaponry, including F-35 fighter planes, to rectify trade balances. Trump also stated that the US would not exempt India from retaliatory tariffs.
"Whatever India is charging us, we will charge them", Trump asserted, reaffirming the importance of equitable trade. He reiterated continued pursuit of a significant trade deal but condemned India's tariffs on some American products as 'very unfair'.
The summit reiterated strengthening economic and strategic relationships between the two countries despite continued trade talks.
