In June this year, Waltham, MA-based Bluespec introduced a revolutionary EDA toolset that creates a new level of abstraction for ASIC and FPGA engineers to control the growing design complexities involved with large-scale digital systems designs. The toolset enables control logic generation on a correct-by-compiler construction basis.

Five months after commercially launching its groundbreaking behavioral synthesis EDA toolset, Bluespec has secured $4.5 million of funding to support channel expansion and increased customer engagements. The funding was led by existing investors Atlas Venture and North Bridge Venture Partners, bringing Bluespec’s total funding raised to $8.5 million.

Bluespec CEO Shiv Tasker plans to use the latest round of financing to ramp up efforts to expand the company’s reach into global markets. “There is increasing competition between offshore design teams that want to move up the value chain and offer not just cost, but speed and quality in design, and the U.S design teams that realize that they must get more productive to keep innovation and design here,” says Tasker. He adds, “Bluespec is the recipient of interest from both groups of designers, requiring us to expand our sales and support capabilities.”

Founded in July 2003, Bluespec has forged alliances with leading EDA tool vendors like Synopsys and Cadence. This should help the company gain some traction soon.
