User or service provider is the kingpin of the market at present. As opposed to the traditional approach of building products to address needs of the masses and gain advantages of mass production, today a product or a solution has to address the needs of a specific user or service provider based on his/her explicit needs. Looking at the Electronic System Design & Manufacturing (ESDM) as a team, the discussion customarily revolves around standalone products like mobile phones, set top boxes and other high volume products. However, in recent years, there have been budding opportunities beyond such products to industry specific, large and integrated products such as point of sale terminals for retail, ATM machines for banks, patient care systems for hospitals & clinics and so on.

Connecting the Dots

In an era, where the end user sets the rules, the foremost challenge facing software companies, equipment manufacturers, semiconductor companies, service providers, system integrators and all those constituting the ecosystem is to work in unison and bring highly integrated products that solve not just one piece of the puzzle, but the entire. They need to constantly innovate in order to stay relevant and develop strong capabilities to connect the dots. How they hook up these dots has to be planned meticulously so that the end user or the buyer realizes a positive impact on his business irrespective of whether he buys a product or a solution. For instance, a patient may connect to a physician or a hospital using his smartphone, which can again be integrated with his medical records, medications and prescriptions to work together in a larger ecosystem and streamline and simplify the entire process of patient care.

The pressure doesn't end here, the starting point while developing a product today is not just having an existing product and doing a makeover to create a new one. It's the ability to understand what is expected and at what price point and timeline. The participants in the development process have to think of ways in which these complex requirements are met within the resources available. Wipro has been significantly investing in building capabilities to play strongly in the integrated solution space. It has not only built up strong engineering capabilities but also numerous additional capabilities such as analytics, operations and services as part of larger infrastructure services and so on. It has also set up in-house labs that facilitate product certifications and validations based on international standards. The Indian multinational has built great knack in successfully rolling out a product into the marketplace and provide all needed support services.
