In 2008, ABVP filed a writ petition in Delhi High Court, seeking the removal of Ramanujam's essay from the course. The matter soon reached the Supreme Court. SC asked for the formation of a committee. Subsequently a four panel group was formed to look into the issue. While three panel members said the essay should be part of the syllabus, one member rejected it saying the topic was too complex for university students. Thus, the essay continued to be a part of the history curriculum until recently. Those who had voted for the retention of the essay were in for a shock when the academic council decided to scrap it. Historians say the episode exposes the attack on the country's most prized asset, its diversity.
