The number '300' does not seem to be a problem for the Hindutva groups. Infact, ABVP has accepted that there are indeed so many Ramayanas. One of the reasons why the Hindutva groups are upset is that Ramanujam's essay has readings that portray Ramayana characters in bad light. The essay describes Sita as Ravana's daughter. The essay also controversially describes Hanuman as "ladies man". Moreover, the essay says that Rama and Sita shared the relationship of sister and brother. The essay also questions Valmiki Ramayana's authenticity as the original version. All this made Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) activists barge into university's history department in 2008 to protest against Ramanujam's work, which they felt hurt religious sentiments. They also went to court citing religious reasons.
