Access Denied! 10 Countries That Have Banned YouTube


#6 Turkey

The prominent video sharing platform was banned recently in March 2014 due to  growing political unrest in the country. The emerging incidents in Syria, Turkey’s neighboring country has prompted the Government to take necessary steps to check any possible social ignite. Prior to that Turkey had sued and blocked YouTube in 2007 following a video that insulted Turkishness. The country’s media referred the incident as a virtual war of insults between Greek, Armenian and Turkish YouTube members.

#7 Thailand

Thailand’s Ministry of Information and Communication Technology blocked YouTube in 2007 after a video that insulted Bhumibol Adulyadej the king of Thailand. The Government urged the video service provider to remove the controversial clip for the ban to be lifted. YouTube later agreed to remove the clips that are offensive to those in power.    

#8 Libya

The Libyan civil war lead to the ban on the famous video sharing platform in the country. YouTube was blocked in the country as there were clips that showed the relatives of those killed in Abu Salim prison out on a demonstration. Even thought the Human Rights Watch condemned against the action, the ban stood in effect till 2011.
