On Vijaydashmi, the idol of Goddess Durga is preceded by a huge procession and it is immersed in the nearby river or lake ceremoniously by the devotees. After immersing the idol, people in Orissa celebrate 'Ravan Podi', where the effigies of demon Ravan are burnt. In the North-eastern state of Tripura, huge fairs are conducted and effigies of Ravan with his brother and son are burnt.
