Amazon Patents A Smartphone Airbag!

Bangalore: While Smartphone manufacturers including Samsung is on a mission to find unbreakable and bendable displays for Smartphones, Amazon has reportedly patented an interesting technology, which could bring an end to the ever-existed display break problem- a Smartphone airbag!

Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon had applied for this patent in 2010, which has methods to protect the expensive Smartphone, if accidently dropped. According to it, a built in accelerometer will trigger the mechanism if it detects the phone is falling too quickly. It will then deploy a safety mechanism- miniature airbags- to protect the device from crashing. The patent also lists alternative methods to cushion the fall including springs and jet-pack style thrusters.

The patent was officially registered by the patent and trademark office of the United States on Tuesday. However reports suggest that Amazon don’t want to make the practical applications of this patent on their devices including the Kindle Fire and the Kindles, rather is baiting on the licensing fees, if someone wants to use the idea.

Eventhough the patent suggests multiple methods of protection, it really doesn’t answer what happens after the safety mechanism is deployed. In automobiles, the air bags should be replaced every time after a collision, which would be a complicated and costlier mechanism when Smartphones are considered. But as we know, people will do everything to protect the life of their expensive new “personal assistants.”
