Work To Death: 10 Unsafe Nations For Journalist

7. Colombia:
Most of the journalists who laid their lives while on duty in Colombia since 1992 have mainly been broadcast reporters working in radio, television, or commentators working in print. The main reasons behind most of the killings are corruption that emerges easily ahead of politics, crime, and human rights. Half of the suspected perpetrators turn out to be paramilitary and government officials, of which 98 percent operate with either total impunity or partially applied criminal justice.

8. Syria:
Syria has recorded one of the highest number of journalists killed, accounting to at least 17 field journalists, 44 citizen journalists and 4 media assistants in 2013. Syria is tagged as ‘cemetery for news providers’ by the report. Journalists are also targeted by the Syria armed opposition groups, who are highly intolerant to the criticism and they brand journalists as spies when they fail to match their views. This has also led to the increasing number of assaults and violence towards journalists. Most of the murdered journalists were Syrian citizens working in television and Internet media, and 15 percent were foreign correspondents.
