Ragging: India's 'Hall Of Shame'



Murder of Pon Navarasu:

He was a first year student at the Rajah Muthiah medical college in Tamil Nadu. He was murdered on November 6, 1996. His body was dismembered and the body parts were scattered in different parts of Tamil Nadu. The accused, John David had confessed to the murder after a week long interrogation. The murder took place while the accused was ragging Navarasu. The gruesome nature of the murder had caused a public outcry and the Tamil Nadu government passed an anti-ragging ordnance criminalizing ragging. The accused was given a double life sentence by the Cuddalore district sessions court on March 11, 1998.

Coimbatore Engineering College Ragging Case:

In the shocking case of ragging in an engineering college in Coimbatore, two senior students were dismissed from the college for locking up two juniors in a room. The deceased students Ashwath Ashok and Bilal Mohammad, both hailing from Thiruvananthapuram were called by two seniors over to their room and forced them to take alcohol and drugs and hit 150 mosquitoes. After lodging complaints with the anti-ragging committee of the college, the two senior boys were dismissed from the college and the college authorities suspended five senior students who remained mute when the two juniors were being ragged.
