Men Who Received Capital Punishment in India

3. Dhananjoy Chatterjee:

Dhananjoy Chatterjee, who worked as a security guard at the apartment residence in Bhawanipur, was sentenced to death for raping and murdering a 14-year-old girl, Hetal Parekh in Kolkata in 1990. The incident shocked the entire nation, mainly because the dreadful act had been committed by the security guard of the building itself where the family of the girl used to reside. He had been charged on three accounts, first, Section 302 (murder) of Indian Penal Code for which the death sentence order was given; second, Section 376 (rape) IPC for which he was sentenced to life imprisonment and third, Section 380 (theft inside house) IPC for  which he was sentenced to five years' imprisonment. However, Dhananjoy continued to seek mercy by appealing to the governor of West Bengal and twice to the President. A P J Abdul Kalam, the then President rejected Dhananjoy’s mercy petition on 4th August, 2004. The President decided to decline the petition after he discussed with legal experts, including the then Attorney General Milon Banerji.  Dhananjoy was finally hanged to death on August 14, 2004 in the Kolkata jail. It was the country's first execution since 1995.
