Is Google Really Eating Into Wikipedia Page Views?

The Wikipedia hits have seen a considerable dip in Indian regional languages as well. Lesser increases were seen in Marathi by 4 percent and Telugu 1 percent. Only in the Tamil version have page views dipped by 11percent. However Hindi page-views increased by a huge 34percent, Bengali by an even bigger 46percent and Malayalam by 36percent.

The pages on Wikipedia can be modified anytime by users using the “citation” link. The number of times users edit a page and the number of editors involved are also in the decline. The rise of smart phones and users changing from desktops to mobile could be the reason for the editing decline as it is difficult to edit a source on mobile. Wikipedia's mobile page-views increased by a huge margin of 51 percent while non-mobile views declined by 20percent.

The managers at Wikipedia feel that there could be errors in counting, but many others feel Google is competing with Wikipedia in the information source. Though the information is provided to the end user, the brand of Wikipedia as a source of free online information takes a beating.
