India to Face Frequent Drought in Future, Say Experts

A recent research project on monsoon, 'Where the Rain Falls' created by CARE International and the UN University noticed that the rise in migration, mainly of poor people has increased since the changing rainfall patterns. Koko Warner, scientific director of the project said, “Our evidence-based research shows that rural people perceive climate changes happening today in the form of rainfall variability. The changes in timing, quality, quantity and overall predictability of rainfall affect households’ risk management decisions, including migration,” as reported by ET Bureau.

A study by Jacob Schewe and Anders Levermann of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research published earlier in November signaled the governments about the monsoon failure that could occur in every fifth year in the coming decades, until any decisive measures are taken to battle climate change.

The Schewe-Levermann study also forecasts a grim future with changing rainfall patterns, caused by global warming. The effect is already being felt in the developing countries like India, the research said. A household survey in India was conducted in Janjgir-Champa district in Chhattisgarh by the researchers to study the effects of climate change.
