Goa: The ultimate partying hub of India, Goa also has its own way of celebrating Holi, which is known as Shigmo in Goa. In the traditional Goan style, the people of Goa celebrate Shigmo with fanfare and parades, followed by applying Abeer and Neel on loved ones.

Several temples in and around Panaji have special arrangements for the festival. ‘Shigmotav’ is celebrated with vibrant colours of gulal and neel. However, the highlight of these celebrations is thev performance of troupes in the form of parades and cultural dramas. At dusk, huge effigies are taken out in processions and prizes are distributed as well. The ‘Panaji Shigmotsav Samiti’ organises a big spectacular parade in Panaji.

Purulia, West Bengal: Purulia in West Bengal is well known for celebrations of Holi in a Folk Style. It is known as Basanta Utsav, marking the festival of colours. The town has a three day folk festival that includes playing holi with the locals, a glimpse of the traditional folk dances like Chau dance, Natua dance, Darbari Jhumur, and songs too. The festival is arranged by the locals and is in a typical folk style. Tent accommodation is available for the tourists. The festival in Purulia is usually attended by around 5000 people. Not just this, there is beautiful ritual during Holi in West Bengal where the head of the family keeps a fast praying for his family's well being. After the processions and offering to the idols, the bhog or prashad is distributed amongst family and friends.
