5 Movements That Awaken Millions Of Indians

Quit India movement, 1942:

On 8th August 1942, Mahatma Gandhi demanded British to ‘Quit India’ and gave a call for immediate independence. It was a movement of civil disobedience. Immediately after the call, over 60,000 Indians were arrested by the British, keeping them imprisoned which included the entire leadership of the INC (Indian National Congress) until 1945, and suppressed civil rights, freedom of speech and freedom of the press. Franklin D. Roosevelt, the then President of America, pressured Churchill to accede to the call, but it was in vain. Though, in terms of immediate objectives, Quit India failed because of heavy-handed suppression, weak coordination and the lack of a clear-cut programme of action. However, it clearly communicated to the British Raj that India can no longer be controlled by them and left them no other choice except to find a way to exit India gracefully and peacefully.
