Airtel is the largest cellular service provider in India as well as the third largest in the world. It has more than 183 million subscribers and it operates in more than 20 countries across the globe.

Sunil Mittal is the founder MD and Chairman of Bharti Airtel. After Sunil Mittal joined into a venture with Siemens for manufacturing ‘push-button’ telephones in 1983, Mittal took three more years and incorporated his own company with the name ‘Bharti Telecom’. Bharti Telecom is the first Indian company to come up with push-button telephones. It was a revolution in the Indian telephone sector. Once again, Mittal revolutionized the Indian telephone market with the introduction of fax machines and cordless phones.

It was in 1995, when Mittal built a cellular network in Delhi and within the next year, it got extended to Himachal Pradesh and later to Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Mittal incorporated this mobile network as ‘Bharti Telecom’. Soon, Bharti got listed in BSE and NSE and all the cellular phone operations of Bharti Telecom were incorporated under a single brand; Airtel.

However, the last year’s ranking of Airtel was 187 and it had a brand value of $5.22 billion.
