2012's Enterprise Shifts, Beyond Apple and Google

SAP: Trying hard to get out of the data center ghetto

For years the name SAP reflects across areas like ERP, BI and CRM. But as of 2012, there has been a significant shift in SAP’s strategy, as they started concentrating on one of the fastest developing sectors- Mobile computing. The company already has stated that their primary strategy is to expand their brand value across enterprise mobility sector, similar to what Apple did many years ago.

The thought all started after SAP acquiring Sybase. Even though Sybase Afaria barely comes into mobile computing, analysts and researchers already have warned SAP not to concentrate more on this sector, as it might result in new management costs and new risks, which probably might be too much for SAP to handle. Being the front runners in a mobility sector is not too easy because it certainly requires investments in mobile security, the platform for applications, and in the mobile applications themselves.

Another big turnaround for SAP was the introduction of SAP HANA, its new in-memory database technology meant to make big data analysis possible at transaction speeds. And the early result where so impressive that SAP has been investing massively on this technology. Recently the company announced number of next gen BI technologies to exploit HANA, including a new explorer visualization tool.

But the fact still remains; HANA is a product for the data center. The advantage in using HANA is helping business people to explore analytics and to familiarize with them.
