10 Biggest Flops in Tech 2012

5. Death Of DVDs

Floppy discs were replaced by CDs which were in turn replaced by DVDs. DVDs have since survived even though Blu Ray Discs are available. But time has come for the world to move on from DVDs too.

Microsoft recently launched Windows 8 without default DVD playback support. Users will have to pay for Windows Media Center, find an alternative player, or hope that manufacturers bundle DVD software with computers.

Users who need to play a DVD on their Windows 8 machine can always install free third-party options such as the open source video VLC media player. The move doesn't really affect Blu-ray fans since they already pay to watch Blu-ray discs on their PC anyway.

But it sure is the beginning of the end for DVDs.
