Could you tell us briefly about your family background?
My family is a traditional one which opposed female child education. I was allowed to appear for my engineering test on a condition that I should nod for marriage and family life. I completed my Btech, Mtech parallely raising my kids. My husband runs a small family business in my native place.
Prized Accomplishment(s):
Finishing my post graduation at IIT Madras and still juggling with career and family travelling every week to work. I feel proud when I heard that six girls of my community are doing their BTech after getting inspiration from me.
Career Profile:
Previous role was individual contributor role and current role involves mentoring new joined staff and helping them to catch up the project. Building and maintaining existing test frameworks.
Degrees That Matter:
I completed Sun Certified Java Programmer 5.0. No Ceritificates are essential, but it would be an added advantage if you have any in QA field.
Working Life Management:
I plan things based on priority and complete them accordingly. I delegate things which don't need my attention to other people and things with minimal intervention to my husband/nearones. I note down things or action items in a notepad for easy remembrance and check in the morning.
Done Differently:
I would have opted for registering Phd and do research for developing software products which could be used by common people who even doesn't know computing.
Required Reading:
For research updates follow IEEE websites in respective fields. To sharp your brain browse sites such as geeksforgeeks.com, careercup.com and solve the problems.
Growth Strategy:
I continously read about techinal developments and learn from my mistakes as well as from my peers. I enhance my skills by attending workshops and conferences to know about latest developments. I observe my manager and other leads to learn managing skills.
Job Profile:
My responbilities include developing test framework, new tests, enhancing the existing tests, closely monitoring the regressions and fixing them. My role is Senior Member of Technical Staff.
Changes In The Professional Environment:
The only change I see is increase in attrition ratio.
Other Thoughts:
As a QA expert, you need to know different types of tools. Always remember that acquiring the skills and showcasing them is incomparable with any assets. Learn controlling your emotions at work and remember the customer usage while testing anything. No test is invalid.
Plans For The Future:
I want to be a test lead leading a short group to acheive my goals as well as assist my subordinates to acheive their goals.
The Decisions That Matter
Leaving my job at CA (when my promotion was due) to take care of my daughter. And joining back in Oracle after a year. Initial catchup was difficult. Decision to join Oracle was really a difficult and a bold decision at that point and I am happy to work in a such a great team and a good manager.
