The Journey So Far
In 1986 started my carrier as EDP Assistant with an adhesive and building material manufacturing company. I worked for Asian Paints (I) Limited and Associated Capsules. I left ACG in year 2009 and currently associated with Inttelix Software Technologies.
Essential Advice
By nature the person should have a thrust for details. Should have patience to get into details of the problem. Always should try to understand the implied needs of the end-users, don't just with the SRS and test cases alone. Bug reports should be raised as critics, don't bring person's name in.
Degrees that Matter
I have seen people with ISTQB certification do out-perform other guys who do not have undergone such professional training program. However, I also seen some guys very good though they do not have any certification. People with good common sense can do the job rightly.
Most Important Decisions
A major part of my carrier, I was belonging to the user team or internal development. Back of my mind, I wanted to work for a software development firm where others should use our product and comment. It was one reason changing to current job. Have to mention here that earlier exposure helped a lot.
Changes in the industry
Earlier it was the job of the developer to test the product, the luxury of having a dedicated Testing team was not there earlier for smaller companies. Today people give a lot of importance to QA, this is one reason our products have major acceptance outside world.
Current and Previous Responsibilities
Previously, I was more in ERP implementation and roll-outs - I was having one tool for all business issues. Today for each issues, we have to identify the right tool :) as I belongs to the other side now. Strategic alliance, solution architecting & delivery are prime roles today.
Currently working at
Planning & Operation, strategic decision making, program/project management, technology management, cost & resource deployment, process enhancement & training & development are major responsibilities
Areas for the Future
Automation may be major focus area for future. Performance related testing, stability, usability & recoverability related testing may have importance in future.
Most Important Lessons
Please go the implied or un-told needs of the customer, you cannot fail.
A Fine Balance:
Fist thing for me in the morning is to prioritize the things. Attend to those things which are important and urgent for you and try to delegate other things. I don't think there will be challenge to leave the office in time.
