E-Governance In India Is Yet To Complete The Last Mile
Bangalore: The ticker on the etaal.gov.in clocked a count of one billion in October 2013. This was a landmark for the government website which aggregates all the e-transactions from over a 1,500 government and allied websites. It had taken eight long years to reach this number. While, in just 55 days as of December 26, 2013, the count doubled. It is the sweet taste of success for the still nascent online transactions in India, reports Economic Times.
The ticker clocking more users means that the e-governance in India is coming of age. More and more people are now relying on the government websites for various purposes including paying water and current bills, filing tax returns, RTI enquiries among others. "It (one billion transactions) is a significant achievement," says J Satyanarayana, secretary, ministry of electronics & IT.
But then it seems all is not that well with this achievement. While experts do acknowledge the e-governance’s advancements they were skeptic about its ability to bring total change in the way users access the government processes. Guru Malladi, partner, government services, Ernst & Young(EY), a consultancy company, says, "The government has been at it for almost a decade now. E-governance transactions have touched a milestone, but we have a long way to go."
