You Can Now Google Search Across Gmail, Drive, Calendar

Bangalore: Google flagged off the trial version of personalized search feature, which allows Gmail users to search the content on web and across Gmail, Google Drive and Google Calendar.

When you hit the search button on google.com now, personalized results, other than web content, will also appear in the results including relevant information and messages from Gmail, and files, documents, spreadsheets, events from Google Drive and Google calendar. The results will be displayed on right hand side of results page.

"When you're looking for something, you should be able to find what you need quickly and easily without needing to think about where it might be, whether it's in your email or out on the public web," Google software engineer, Bram Moolenaar, said in a blogs post on Monday.

The trial version of this feature is an extension of testing started in August that integrated Google search with Gmail, and by the request of the testing team, the Google is now adding other services that can be searched simultaneously, Moolenaar said.

The best result for a search is not a single entity but a list or group of related results, Google said in a blog post in August. “Sometimes the best answer for your query isn’t available on web, it may be contained somewhere else, such as in your email,” the blog added.

Only the Gmail users can access the current trial, English is the only language option, and it is not available on Google Apps accounts, as said by Google. Anyone who wants to try this trial, have to opt for it on the updated trial page.

The new feature sound good but also raises privacy concerns over baring person’s mailbox and drive, so most likely it could be an opt-in service.

The participants at any given moment can come back to the opt-in page leaving the trial, Google said.
