What's new about Microsoft's Windows 8?

Bangalore: Windows 8 users will now be treated to the ability to use mobile apps on their desktops-- an exciting feature (demonstrated during Windows 8’s debut yesterday at the Mobile World Congress) that changed the face of computing as we knew it. And as if this one feature isn’t exciting enough, Microsoft has a killer punch packed in Windows 8 according to the Daily Mail, for its competition in the iOS and Android -- the access to Office.

At the event (which was held in Spain), Steven Sinofsky, the President of Windows and Windows Live announced a free downloadable free trial version of the OS for the public, which according to him underwent more than 100,000 changes after the Developer version went live.

Windows still is at the top spot in terms of OS used by the general public , and a report from Forrester last year showed around 80 percent of enterprises used the Windows OS. With this scenario in mind, the move to keep Office available to Windows 8 tablet users is wise, especially since the statistics in Forrester’s report showed that Apple and Linux put together were used by lesser than a 15 percent of enterprises.

One thing’s for sure: Microsoft has leapfrogged Apple (at least by a little) in putting the desktop computer to rest.

The release date for the complete version of the OS has not been decided yet as per a report on the Daily Mail, but it is expected in October this year.

How have the intial responses to Windows 8 been?
