App To Combat "Culture Of Rape" In India: When Activism Meets Technology


“She had aspirations for her life,” said Secretary Clinton. “But if her life embodied the aspirations of a rising nation, then her death – her murder – pointed to the many challenges still holding it back.” The culture of rape in India – and elsewhere – “prevents women from being seen as equal human beings,” she said.

This is when the technology stepped in for the cause. A New York based app developers, led by filmmaker Nancy Schartzman, whose film, in 2009, “The Line” touched the controversial area of sexuality and consent, has come up with “Circle of 6” app. The app helps the young women from risky sexual encounters and assault by alarming trusted friends about her situation. Circle of 6 was a winner of the 2011 Apps Against Abuse challenge held by the Obama Administration and has also received awards from the Institute of Medicine and the Avon Foundation for Women.
