Android Grabs 75 Percent Of Smartphone Market in Q3, Apple Far Behind

Bangalore: Google’s Android covered a whopping 75 percent of the Smartphones shipped world wide in third quarter, according to a report from IDC (International Data Corporation), a market research firm. Apple was placed second with 14.9 percent of the market. The Android shipment growth was 91.5 percent year over year, double the overall market growth of 46.4 percent.

The data clearly spells Android’s dominance over Apple’s iOS in global Smartphone market. Android not only is cutting over iOS share in market but also of BlackBerrry, Symbian, Linux and others.

Interestingly iOS had double-digit market share for the quarter, the only mobile OS to have this figure after Android, helping Apple to retain its tag of being world’s most valuable company.

"Android has been one of the primary growth engines of the Smartphone market since it was launched in 2008," Ramon Llamas, an IDC analyst, said in the report. "In every year since then, Android has effectively outpaced the market and taken market share from the competition. In addition, the combination of Smartphone vendors, mobile operators and end users who have embraced Android has driven shipment volumes higher. Even today, more vendors are introducing their first Android-powered Smartphones to market."

While Android is spreading its wings into overall global Smartphone market by allying with Smartphone vendors and mobile operators, Apple may be just turning into a niche player.
