US-Based Operant AI Enters India Amid Growing AI Security Issues
US-based cyber security firm Operant AI has made its inroad into India with a plan to meet the growing security needs of artificial intelligence (AI) applications. Operant AI considers India's maturing AI environment as a strong opportunity to deliver security solutions custom-made for AI-powered businesses.
Operant AI co-founder Vrajesh Bhavsar said that the growth is necessitated by the need for AI security solutions to keep up with fast-paced technology developments.
"There's so much new technology emerging so quickly that people are just rushing into it without really working out what is secure, what is reliable, and how to be careful about these things", Bhavsar added. "Ultimately, as we've experienced through many cycles in the past, if you just rush into some technology headlong, it ends up biting you later".
He added that India's healthcare and finance sectors, which are aggressively embracing AI-based solutions, would stand to gain the most from Operant's security solutions. The company has not yet made statements about possible partnerships or early clients in India but confirmed that they are in talks with several organizations.
“We know that India is going to be a key player in the global AI landscape, and security has to be part of that conversation from day one”, Bhavsar added.
Founded in 2021 by Bhavsar, Priyanka Tembey, and Ashley Roof, Operant AI specializes in securing AI-driven software through real-time protection mechanisms. The company focuses on detecting vulnerabilities specific to AI systems, ensuring data integrity, and preventing AI model manipulation.
With India becoming a center of AI innovation, with the government, enterprises, and startups heavily investing in AI-powered automation and analytics, security has become a major issue. Greater dependence on AI models makes organizations vulnerable to advanced cyber threats that traditional security systems might fail to spot.
"The threats are quite different from the kinds of threats companies have had to contend with before. It's not necessarily about keeping hackers out, but about preventing AI models from getting poisoned, data pipelines from being undermined, and decisions made by AI systems from being trusted", Bhavsar clarified.
Operant AI asserts that its security offerings are able to defend AI applications in minutes of being deployed. The firm's strategy centers on real-time discovery, detection, and defense, allowing businesses to make their AI models secure without hindering innovation.
"Currently, security is usually an afterthought in building AI, but that just doesn't work anymore. You can't remedy issues afterwards because AI models continuously evolve and so do threats", he said.
Operant AI raised $10 million in a Series A funding round co-led by SineWave Ventures and Felicis, with Alumni Ventures, Massive, Calm Ventures, Gaingels, and other angel investors joining in, in 2024. The investment took the company's total funding to $13.5 million.
With its expansion into India, Operant AI will be competing with new cybersecurity companies building AI-centric security solutions, a key milestone in protecting AI-driven businesses from increasingly sophisticated cyber threats.
