Amitabh Kant Appointed Independent Director at upGrad to Drive Global Strategy

upGrad has appointed Amitabh Kant, former G20 Sherpa and ex–CEO of NITI Aayog as an Independent Non-Executive Director, marking a significant leadership addition as the edtech company enters its next phase of global and domestic growth.
The company said Kant will play a major role in shaping its long-term strategy, especially as it expands across international markets and accelerates India’s skilling ecosystem. His experience in public policy, governance, and economic transformation is expected to support upGrad’s push toward delivering large-scale, future-ready learning solutions.
Kant noted that India’s youth need 'new-age skilling' at both speed and scale. He added that upGrad’s strong partnerships with universities and enterprises give it a strong foundation to build job-ready talent and support entrepreneurship.
Ronnie Screwvala, Co-Founder and chairperson of upGrad, said Kant’s inclusion reinforces the company’s long-term mission and will help guide its global ambitions. Over the past two years, upGrad has expanded its footprint across the Middle East, Africa, Southeast Asia, Europe, and North America. The company has also strengthened its university collaborations and invested heavily in AI-led learning systems, multi-campus infrastructure, and personalized academic content.

In addition to expanding its board with seasoned leaders, upGrad recently appointed Deepesh Dhakad as Chief Product and Technology Officer to drive product innovation and learning-tech efficiency.
Financially, upGrad posted an EBITDA profit of Rs 15 crore in FY25, recovering from a loss of Rs 285 crore in FY24. The company reported gross revenue of Rs 1,943 crore for the fiscal year, reflecting stronger operational performance.
